How to Stop Comparing Yourself to Others
It’s way too easy to look at someone else’s life and feel like you’re not doing enough. Whether it’s social media, school, or even family expectations, we all want to feel accepted and successful. But the truth is, there will always be people doing better than you—and always people doing worse. So how do you break free from the cycle of comparing yourself to others? Here’s how:
1. Set Your Own Goals
One major reason we compare ourselves to others is that we don’t have our own goals. Instead, we look at what someone else is doing and think, That should be me. But should it? Do you even want that, or are you just feeling pressured? Set personal goals that actually matter to you. If you got a “C” on a test but Jonny got an “A,” set your goal to get a “B” next time. Your goal should be to be better than your past, not chase Jonny. Once you do, your focus shifts from other people’s achievements to your own progress.
2. Practice Gratitude
It’s easy to focus on what you don’t have, but what about what you do have? Take a moment to think of 10 things you’re grateful for—big or small. Maybe you created an awesome piece of art, hit an insane kill-to-death ratio in a game, have amazing friends, supportive parents, a pet that makes you happy, or even just a place to call home. When you appreciate what you have, you stop wishing for someone else’s life.
3. Get Off Social Media (Or Unfollow the Right People)
Social media is the biggest comparison trap. You scroll through Instagram or TikTok and see people flexing their perfect lives, expensive clothes, vacations, and achievements. But here’s the thing—most of it is fake. People only post the best parts of their lives, not the struggles, failures, or bad days. If constantly seeing other people’s "perfect" moments makes you feel like you’re falling behind, take a break or unfollow those accounts. Out of sight, out of mind.
Final Thoughts
Comparison is a trap that never ends. Instead of measuring yourself against others, focus on your own journey. Set your own goals, appreciate your wins, and remember—nobody has it all figured out, no matter how perfect they seem online.
