How to Be a GOOD Uncle

Let me introduce you to my Uncle Rob. He’s not the most attractive, richest, or most respected guy in the family, but he’s my favorite uncle. Why? Because he’s everything my dad WAS NOT. In fact, he’s the reason I started this blog and my Youtube Channel.

Here are 5 reasons why Uncle Rob was the GOAT and how you can tell if you’ve got an amazing uncle too:

1. He’s Always Light and Funny

Uncle Rob had this way of keeping things chill no matter what was going on. Even when my aunt or other family members got frustrated with him (mostly about his appearance), he’d just smile, crack a joke, or make a silly comment to lighten the mood. Being around him always felt fun—no heavy, negative vibes. If you’ve got an uncle who can keep the good energy flowing, hold onto him!

2. He Can Laugh at Himself

Uncle Rob looked like a real-life Homer Simpson—bald and heavyset—and he totally owned it. I could joke about his looks, and instead of getting mad, he’d roll his eyes, smack his lips, grunts, and laugh it off. He never took himself too seriously, and that felt like a superpower. He showed me how freeing it is not to take things personally.

3. He’s Open About His Struggles

One of the coolest things about Uncle Rob was how vulnerable he was. He talked about losing his hair, gaining weight, and even struggles he had in dating and family life. Hearing about his challenges made me realize he wasn’t perfect—and that was okay. It showed me it’s normal to struggle and that I wasn’t alone in feeling unsure about life sometimes.

4. He Actually Listens

Uncle Rob didn’t just talk about himself; he cared about what I had to say. He’d ask about my life, my passions, and the things stressing me out. Then he’d share his own experiences, helping me feel less worried. For example, I was nervous about losing my hair, and he told me, “Look at me, I lost my hair in high school, and I still got girls. You just gotta work on your personality and make them laugh.” And coming from a guy who knew how to charm people, I believed him.

5. He’s Open-Minded About New Trends

Uncle Rob wasn’t stuck in his ways. He was down to watch the movies I loved, try out my favorite video games, read the comic books I was reading or check out the latest food joints I was hyped about. He wanted to know what I was into and experience it with me. That made him feel like more of a friend than just an uncle.

Why It All Matters

These five things made Uncle Rob the best uncle ever—and honestly, everything my dad wasn’t. My dad couldn’t connect with me like that, but Uncle Rob filled that gap. That’s why I started this blog and my Youtube Channel: I want to be the “Uncle Rob” in your life—the person you can joke around with, share trends, and just connect with.

Got a video I have to watch, a trend I need to check out, or a game I should try? Drop it in the comments—I’d love to react to it or try it out! Let’s make this space fun and light, just like Uncle Rob would.
